Nursing Education and Career Development: Books

Find Print Books

How do I find print books I can use for my research?

  • Search the Erwin Library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC):
    • Copy the call number
    • Locate the book on the library shelf; most are in the General Collection
  • Browse the shelves near a book you have found already to be useful; other books in the same call number range may also be useful to your research:
    • The LC Classification Brochure is available online and also in paper copies at the library Circulation Desk
    • Have a copy with you to help you find call number areas to browse
  • Make an Interlibrary Loan request for a Book:
    • The Erwin Library will borrow it for you to pick up here at WCC
    • Just give yourself a week or so for the process

Find Erwin Library Print Books in the OPAC

OPAC Search

To find a print book in the Erwin Library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)

  • Click the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) direct link to go to the online catalog Search/Home screen

  • Enter your search term into the Search box
  • Limit your search using the drop-down menu; in the example we've used "subject" which is more narrow a search than "words or phrase" (i.e. Keyword), but useful in this case since "nursing" is such a broad topic
  • Select the Exact radio button to focus the search even more
  • Wayne is the library drop-down menu choice to search the Erwin Library at Wayne Community College
  • Click the Search button

  • Write down the call number of the book if it is listed as available and seems useful
  • Make sure to note the collection area (in this example, the General Collection)
  • Click the blue title link for more information about the book

  • Choose Catalog Record to find out the most you can about the book, such as Contents, a Summary, or other, related Subject terms
